Carol A. Johnson is a research sociologist, certified
psychotherapist and founder of Largely Positive Inc., an organization
that promotes health and self-esteem among larger people. In addition,
she is author of the book, Self-Esteem Comes In All Sizes: How to be
Happy and Healthy at Your Natural Weight (Doubleday, 1996), now available
from Gurze Books, 1-800-756-7533, www.gurze.com. She also publishes a quarterly
newsletter, On a Positive Note, which deals with issues of size
and weight.
Her experience in weight-related issues is both professional
and personal. She has been above average in weight since birth and has
struggled with all the issues common to larger women in this society. For
ten years she has studied the research on obesity, and is now a leader
in the crusade to disseminate accurate information on this subject.
Ms. Johnson has spoken extensively to both consumer and
professional groups, including physician, dietitian, and nursing organizations.
She has appeared on CBS This Morning, MSNBC, and a variety of local
and national talk shows. She has been featured in Woman’s Day, Ladies
Home Journal, Elle, and BBW magazines, and has given many television,
radio, newspaper, and magazine interviews. She is working on a second book,
aimed at teen girls, and has also been collaborating with researchers at
the University of Pennsylvania on several weight-related projects.
