Carolyn D. Runowicz, MD, is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in the field of gynecologic cancer. Dr. Runowicz has developed innovative treatment strategies in gynecologic oncology.
Dr. Runowicz has held many leadership positions in national organizations. She was the first woman president of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists in 2000. She was elected to serve on the national board of directors of the American Cancer Society and was recently selected to be the second vice president, with ascendancy to president of the American Cancer Society in November 2005. As a representative of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Dr. Runowicz has testified at Senate hearings advocating cancer screening. Most recently, she was a speaker for the President's cancer panel on "Meeting the Challenges of Older Adult Cancer Survivors."
Dr. Runowicz has been chosen as a "Local Legend" from Connecticut by the American Medical Women's Association. Congresswomen Nancy Johnson and Nita Lowey nominated Dr. Runowicz as their choice for Connecticut and New York respectively. This honor has been bestowed upon women physicians who have demonstrated commitment, originality, innovation or creativity in their field of medicine. She was recently appointed by President Bush to the serve on the National Cancer Advisory Board.
Dr Runowicz is an author of several books for the public, including her most recent book The Answer to Cancer. In addition, Dr. Runowicz is also a 12-year breast cancer survivor.
