Since 1995 Dr. D. Lawrence Wickerham, MD, has been the Associate Chairman of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), a cooperative trial group funded by the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Wickerham is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the NSABP scientific activities at its Operations Center located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is the Protocol Officer for the NSABP's Cancer Prevention Trials, and is responsible for the medical oversight of these studies. He coordinates the trial activities with the National Cancer Institute, other federal agencies, NSABP Committees, NSABP members, and representatives of the pharmaceutical industry.

In 1998, Dr. Wickerham received NCI recognition award for outstanding achievement in breast cancer prevention. He has worked full-time for the NSABP since 1981, and is currently an Associate Professor of Human Oncology at the Pittsburgh Campus of the Medical College of Pennsylvania/Hahnemann University.

He is a 1972 graduate of Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania, and currently sits on the Board of Trustees at the college. In 1976, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
