Amelie G. Ramirez, Dr.P.H., is Associate Professor of Medicine and Deputy Director, Chronic Disease Prevention and Control Research Center (formerly the Center for Cancer Control Research), at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. She is also Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and Associate Director for Community Research and Program Leader for the Cancer Prevention and Health Promotion Program of the San Antonio Cancer Institute (SACI).

Dr. Ramirez directs and participates in several research projects involving Hispanics and such issues as cancer risk factors and genetics, smoking prevention and cessation, and the effects of breast cancer on families. She is Principal Investigator of Redes En Acción: The National Hispanic/Latino Cancer Network, a Special Populations Networks initiative funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Additional research projects are supported by such agencies and organizations as the NCI, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Texas Department of Health and San Antonio Cancer Institute.

Dr. Ramirez was appointed by the White House to the National Cancer Advisory Board and by the Secretary of Health to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Advisory Council of the National Institutes of Health. In addition, she serves on the Behavior Change Expert Panel (BCEP) for the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy's National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign. She formerly served on the National Cancer Policy Board of the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine and Commission of Life Sciences.

She also is a member of the Media and Counter Marketing Panel of the American Legacy Foundation, Board of Directors of the Latino Council on Alcohol and Tobacco, Physician Oncology Education Program of the Texas Medical Association, Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition of the Texas Department of Health, and National Breast Health Advisory Council and Hispanic/Latino Task Force, both of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

She is on the editorial board of the Health Education Research Journal and was formerly Associate Editor for the Special Populations Section of the American Journal of Health Promotion. She publishes extensively in journals on cancer, public health, health education and promotion, and preventive medicine.
