Alan Menter, MD, born in England, is a graduate of the Medical School of the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. He completed his dermatology residency at Pretoria General Hospital at the University of Pretoria, also in South Africa, and fellowships at Guys Hospital, London, UK, and at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Dr. Menter joined Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas in 1975 and received his American Academy of Dermatology board certification in 1977. From 1979 to 1999, he served as medical director of the Baylor Psoriasis Center. Dr. Menter has held the position of clinical director of the National Psoriasis Tissue Bank from 1996 to 2002. In 1992, he was appointed Chairman of the Division of Dermatology at Baylor University Medical Center and presently holds that position. Dr. Menter is also Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

Dr. Menter currently serves as an assistant editor of The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. He is a member of the editorial board of Psoriasis Net with American Academy of Dermatology. He serves as Texas State Chairman of the Leader's Society, Dermatology Foundation. He is also a founding member of the Annenberg Circle, Dermatology Foundation; a member of the medical advisory board committee of the National Psoriasis Foundation; a member of the editorial advisory board of The Journal of Clinical Dermatology; and a member of the editorial board of Specialist Medicine-Dermatology.

Dr. Menter's resume lists some 120 publications, including several book chapters, and a book on psoriasis. He was co-author of the first gene discovery for psoriasis, published in Science. His extensive research on psoriasis runs the gamut from ultraviolet phototherapy, to biologic therapy, to mapping of genetic patterns of susceptibility. His broad clinical practice includes over 570 patients on systemic therapy, plus a phototherapy centre utilizing Narrowband UVB and PUVA.

In addition to his involvement in psoriasis treatment and research, Dr. Menter served as president of the Texas Dermatological Society in 1995 and was a member of the board of directors of the American Academy of Dermatology, from 1995 to 1997. He has been listed in the Best Doctors in America since 1994 and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare since 1996. He also represented the South African National Rugby Team (Springboks) in 1968.
