Dr. Carlos Poston received his Ph.D. in 1990 from the Counseling and Clinical Psychology Program at the University of California-Santa Barbara. He completed the Clinical Psychology Residency at the USAF Medical Center Wright-Patterson, Wright-Patterson AFB and a clinical fellowship in Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland AFB, San Antonio TX. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Behavioral Medicine Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Poston's primary research interests are in the following areas:
- the long-term interdisciplinary management of chronic medical disorders, primarily obesity and cardiovascular disease
- public health approaches to primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity
- improving adherence todesired and prescribed health behaviors.
Dr. Poston was previously the Chief of Health & Rehabilitation Psychology at the APA approved Clinical Psychology Residency at Malcolm Grow Medical Center, Andrews AFB, MD, where he specialized in obesity treatment and chronic pain management, including refractory headache and TMD. Dr. Poston is a study section member in Behavioral Science and Epidemiology research for the U.S. Army Medical Research & Material Command Breast Cancer Research Program and the American Heart Association, Texas Affiliated. He has also been a consultant to the American Institute of Biological Sciences in the area of behavioral interventions for chronic medical conditions and a consultant on disability and rehabilitation to the United States Coast Guard Disability Adjudication Office. Dr. Poston has also been a visiting scholar at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.
Dr. Poston has published over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and has presented at numerous national and international conferences and meetings on the etiology, assessment, and management of obesity and eating disorders. Dr. Poston is a reviewer for numerous research journals including Addictive Behaviors, American Journal of Health Behavior, American Journal of Health Promotion, American Journal of Public Health, Cancer, Diabetes Care, Journal of the American Dietetic Association, Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, Obesity Research, Psychosomatic Medicine, and Women & Health. He is an active member in several professional societies including the American Psychological Association and the Society of Behavioral Medicine.
