Catherine Tuck, MD
Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center, Columbia University

Biography:
Dr. Catherine Tuck is an Irving Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University and Associate Director of the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University/New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Tuck received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University, graduating magna cum laude and majoring in biology. She returned to her hometown of Dallas, Texas and received her medical degree at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. After graduating, she moved with her new husband to New York City, where she trained in internal medicine at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, serving as Chief Resident from 1992-1993. She completed her fellowship in endocrinology in 1995, studying with Drs. Lars Berglund and Henry Ginsberg in the Division of Preventive Medicine and Nutrition.

Dr. Tuck is the recipient of the DeWitt Goodman Research Award through the American Heart Association, which was given for her study of the effects of hormone replacement in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes. She is also a principal investigator at the Columbia site for the ACCORD (Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes) study, an important new clinical study funded by the National Institutes of Health, which will begin enrolling patients in October, 2000.  The purpose of the ACCORD study will be to determine the best goals for blood sugar, blood cholesterol and blood pressure numbers in people with type 2 diabetes. Other research projects include those aimed at finding out how fatty meals affect cholesterol and triglyceride levels in diabetic patients and an exciting new project to test ways of using the Internet to help people control their blood sugars.

Dr. Tuck has worked at the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center since its inception nearly three years ago, caring for patients along with other members of a dedicated diabetes team. She is a member of the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association.

We regret to inform our readers that Dr. Tuck passed away in May, 2001.
