Dr. David August is an Associate Professor and the Acting Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey / Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey. He received his undergraduate degree in Life Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He trained in General Surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital and in Surgical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute before coming to Yale Medical School as a faculty member. After spending five years on the faculty at the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. August returned to the East Coast in 1994 to assume his current position at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ).
A clinically active surgeon, Dr. August has directed both the Breast and Gastrointestinal Tumor Groups at CINJ. Through his longstanding interest in nutrition support of hospitalized patients, he began to investigate the use of dietary based substances for the prevention of cancer. His research in this area has led to recent publications concerning the use of green tea derivatives to prevent colorectal cancer. He is the author of over 70 journal articles and book chapters. A member of the Society of University Surgeons, the Society for Surgical Oncology, and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, he is currently engaged in a variety of studies that look to optimize the use of nutritional substances in patient care and disease prevention.
